Marine Science With Plocan At The Canary Islands Science And Innovation Plocan provides: (1) an ocean observatory for the continuous and real time monitoring in fields such as the study of global change and ocean acidification, water column and deep sea ecosystems, ocean biogeochemistry and geophysics. The main plocan facility, the oceanic platform, will be located in the open sea, one mile off the coast, in the municipality of telde (northwest of the island of gran canaria) in an area of 23 km2 reserved for scientific technical experimentation. In particular, centres specialised in the monitoring and tracking of cetacean health and in operational oceanography will be brought together from across the region in order to integrate, harmonise and optimise knowledge, infrastructures and best practices in the region. Smart specialisation has put the focus on the ocean. plocan is a competence centre for marine issues, funded by the eu, and provides an infrastructure for developing cutting edge research and advanced ocean technology.

The second edition of the event focused on the ocean and climate change, an area of particular relevance for the canary islands, where over 80% of the territory is sea, and where island regions face challenges such as sea level rise, coastal erosion, and an increase in extreme weather events. Plocan's mission is to provide a cost effective combination of services, including housing, operations, data and access to the multipurpose offshore platform, observatories and test bed facilities, that address upcoming ocean science challenges and socio economic needs. By touring the facilities and learning about its projects and services, political representatives confirmed that plocan is an infrastructure that not only advances scientific knowledge but also accelerates innovation, economic development, and job creation in the marine and maritime sectors. Plocan offers both onshore and offshore experimental facilities and laboratories, operational throughout the whole year thanks to the canary islands excellent climatic conditions. plocan also brings a broad experience in large national and eu marine maritime projects and initiatives.
