Rule Follower Freethinkers Anonymous Sometimes i know the rules don’t have to be strictly followed. there are times when i can see enough of an intersection from a distance that i know i don’t have to stop because there aren’t any cars coming the other way. Rules can govern human behavior, but they have no power to order the affairs of our minds and hearts. people often identify themselves as being either rule followers or rule breakers, and both with equal degrees of pride.
The Rule Follower Story I tend to lean on the "rule follower" side of the equation if it's easy enough to follow and doesn't negatively affect me and mine, but i abhor arbitrary and sometimes antiquated rules as well as overreach. Fortunately, i have been blessed with rule followers in my life that invite me to reconsider some of my ideas while at the same time occasionally appreciating my “rule” alternatives that give them food for thought. Maybe it was because i was always a rule follower, unlike most of my peers. i was a misfit, if you will, but the wrong kind of misfit. i wasn’t the cool kind of misfit, the kind everyone admires and even aspires to be. almost everyone. that type is overrated, if you ask me, and a menace. To protect the identities of everyone in the list i called it “anonymous” and, because i’d learned about the freethinkers from mark twain, i added that to the name.

During jesus’ time on earth, he was both a rule follower and a rule breaker. he followed god’s rule of loving but ignored man made rules as evidenced by healing on the sabbath. because of this, i am free to follow the law of love. if i am loving god and others, i am a rule follower. I’m a writer, thinker, and recovering rule follower, here to empower others—especially recovering rule followers and “religious good kids”—to recognize and dismantle limiting mindsets and made up rules.
