Rich Earth Institute Urine Nutrient Reclamation Program Rich earth operates the first and largest community scale urine nutrient recycling program in the us. the program grew out of local support for the idea of ‘peecycling’ – community members who were collecting more urine than they could use, and one local farmer who was enthusiastic about using urine as a fertilizer. The rich earth institute’s urine nutrient reclamation program (unrp) is the first community scale urine diversion program (ud program) in the united states. initiated in 2012, we now divert thousands of gallons of urine from the wastewater stream annually.

With funding from usda’s northeast sare program, we have quantified effects of pure and diluted urine on crop yield. we have also looked at ammonia (nitrogen) loss to evaporation, and effectiveness of adding urine to compost. The urine nutrient reclamation program is the first community scale urine recycling project in the united states, and continues to fulfill its function of: preventing water pollution.
