Community Scale Urine Nutrient Reclamation Program
Rich Earth Institute Community Scale Urine Nutrient Reclamation Program Rich earth operates the first and largest community scale urine nutrient recycling program in the us. the program grew out of local support for the idea of ‘peecycling’ – community members who were collecting more urine than they could use, and one local farmer who was enthusiastic about using urine as a fertilizer. The rich earth institute’s urine nutrient reclamation program (unrp) is the first community scale urine diversion program (ud program) in the united states. initiated in 2012, we now divert thousands of gallons of urine from the wastewater stream annually.

The urine nutrient reclamation program is the first community scale urine recycling project in the united states, and continues to fulfill its function of: preventing water pollution. This presentation and participant panel about rich earth's community scale urine nutrient reclamation program was part of the 2020 rich earth summit: reclaim. Since its inception in 2012, the urine nutrient reclamation program (unrp) has grown from about 600 gallons year of urine collected to over 10,000 gallons year. the program now involves almost 200 participants from around brattleboro, vt and supplies pasteurized urine fertilizer to 4 different farms for use on hay fields.

Rich earth has developed an energy efficient pasteurization system that processes all of the urine in our community scale collection program. we are currently developing nitrogen stabilization methods and energy efficient freeze concentration technology to reduce storage, transport, and application costs. Since its start in 2012, our urine nutrient reclamation program has developed systems for community–scale urine collection and refined them according to participant feedback and to maximize efficiencies. The rich earth institute advances urine nutrient reclamation (or "peecycling") through research, demonstration, and education. based in vermont, rich earth’s flagship program is the first and largest community scale urine recycling program in the us. by recycling the nutrients in urine, communities and gardeners can prevent downstream pollution,. Rei developed its urine nutrient reclamation program back in 2012 which was the first community scale program of its kind in the united states. rei used a seed grant of $1,000 to get going and the program has since grown from 60 part time “donors” and 600 gallons of urine collected to 180 full time (and very committed) donors and 10,000.
