Open Source Seed Systems
Open Source Seed Systems Centre For Sustainable Agriculture From seed to bread do you know where the seed in your food comes from? our open source bread creates awareness and a link between you and the plant breeder. The osss program works with breeders, farmers and through multi stakeholder initiatives to develop open source seed systems based on protected commons for seed varieties instead of exclusive intellectual property rights.
The Open Source Seed Licence Open Source Seeds We compare the concept with the open innovation character of the plant breeder’s rights system, exemplified by the breeder’s exemption, and the major other open source initiative in the sector, bios. we also present other ways to limit negative impact of the patent system on plant breeding. Open source seed systems are frameworks designed to ensure that plant genetic material and new crop varieties remain freely available for farmers and breeders to use, save, share, and further develop without intellectual property restrictions. Open source seeds are a movement to protect seeds as a shared, living heritage—free to use, save, and share without corporate patents. inspired by the open source software model, they promote biodiversity, farmer sovereignty, and climate resilience. A number of global initiatives exist that focus on safeguarding diversity, such as the global crop diversity trust and the millennium seed bank partnership. other initiatives like “access to seed index” aim to bridge the gap between the world’s leading seed companies and the smallholder farmer.

The report introduces the relevant concepts of freed seeds, and presents the emerging network of open source seed projects, which is a growing, global collaboration of seed savers, breeders, farmers, activists, ngos, independent researchers, and institutions…. I provide an analysis of the open source seed (oss) concept and movement that is emerging globally, and how it maps out against identified challenges and opportunities in seed system governance in the context of dsi. From land enclosures to lab enclosures: digital sequence information, cultivated biodiversity and the movement for open source seed systems (2022) other publications. Open source seed systems describe mechanisms for seed development and distribution that legally ensure seeds and any subsequent genetic modifications remain freely available for use, adaptation, and further development by anyone.
