Home Open Source Seeds This paper discusses an emerging open source movement in the plant breeding sector, dubbed “open source seed.” we describe the two main “open source seed” initiatives and discuss them on the basis of their primary call: to “free the plant genetic resources” from corporate controls. Anyone may use open source seed, grow it, propagate it and develop it further through breeding. in addition, the seed and any further developments of it may be sold, exchanged or given away within the framework of existing laws. Open source seeds are a movement to protect seeds as a shared, living heritage—free to use, save, and share without corporate patents. inspired by the open source software model, they promote biodiversity, farmer sovereignty, and climate resilience. Software and seeds seem as different as chalk and cheese – but as programmers have done for decades, farmers have innovated and shared seeds without any intellectual property rights (ipr).

The open source seed movement affirms that plant genetics and their physical traits can not, and should not, be owned by individuals or corporations. in other words, plants should never be privatized or restricted because they are a collective resource. The open source seed initiative (ossi) is dedicated to maintaining fair and open access to plant genetic resources worldwide in order to ensure the availability of germplasm to farmers, gardeners, breeders, and communities of this and future generations. Open source seeds are those that are freely available to everyone, and their genetic information can be modified, shared and improved upon by all without restriction. Ossi is working to create a pool of open source varieties, to connect farmers and gardeners to suppliers of open source seed, and to inform and educate citizens about seed issues. learn more. you have the freedom to use these ossi seeds in any way you choose.
