Cumberland Historic City Center C O Canal Trust Cumberland’s historic city center is a three block brick pedestrian mall with restaurants, unique shops, and art galleries housed in significant turn of the century architecture. The completion of the chesapeake and ohio canal, and the arrival of the baltimore and ohio railroad converted this small town into a major transportation and industrial center.

Cumberland C O Canal Trust The cumberland terminus visitor center is located at mile 184.5 along the c&o canal towpath in allegany county, md. located in the western maryland railway station, the visitor center features a spacious exhibit area full of interactive displays about the history of the c&o canal and cumberland. These buildings, which were formerly banks, hotels, and department stores, are relics of the city's former wealth and importance during the industrial age. they now contain tourist oriented businesses such as sidewalk cafes, antique stores, boutiques and art galleries. After collaboration among many entities, the resulting design created a beautiful yet functional space that will transform baltimore street into the community’s much used central gathering place – a place of pride and identity for residents and one of the must see urban spaces for visitors. A visit to historic city center is not only a chance to shop and dine, it's an opportunity to get a feel for the pulse of cumberland's arts and entertainment community.

The cumberland visitor center for the c&o canal national historical park is another key feature of canal place. it offers interactive and educational displays about the history of the canal and the city of cumberland. Its vast rail network and the canal allowed cumberland to flourish as the gateway between the western industrial cities of pittsburgh, the western frontier and the industry on the eastern seaboard. Tells the story of the c&o canal, boat building, coal industry and cumberland as a transportation crossroads. After looking at the monument and the headquarters, we headed in to the canal place visitors center. this is affiliated with the chesapeake and ohio canal national historical park (c&o trail). the c&o trail runs along the potomac river for 184 miles as a bike and hike trail.
