Transformative Experience Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Transformative experiences are experiences that radically change the experiencer in both an epistemic and personal way (see paul 2014). when a person transforms epistemically, they gain knowledge of “what the experience is like” that they could not have had without the experience. I will argue not only that imaginable experiences can be transformative, but that experiences of a kind which an agent is experientially acquainted with can also be transformative.

A Transformative Experience Perspective

A Transformative Experience Perspective The concept of transformative experience (te) has been widely explored by several disciplines from philosophy to neurobiology, and in different domains, from the spiritual to the educational one. this attitude has engendered heterogeneous models to explain this phenomenon. This book argues that, for choices involving dramatically new, life changing experiences, we are confronted by the brute fact that we can know very little about our subjective futures. Paul argues that such a decision making process is not possible for some options, called "transformative experiences", because the experience fundamentally transforms the person experiencing it. paul offers a hypothetical example of a decision to become a vampire. Transformative experiences are characterized by application of school content in everyday experience, expansion of students’ perception of the world, and increased value for aspects of the world re seen through the lens of science content.

This volume examines the nature and significance of transformative experiences as they occur across a variety of contexts in human life. by treating these events as social as well as individual phenomena, the essays bring to light the various ways in which cultural and institutional forces influence narratives of personal change. As i develop it, a transformative experience is a kind of experience that is both radically new to the agent and changes her in a deep and fundamental way; there are experiences such as becoming a parent, discovering a new faith, emigrating to a new country, or fighting in a war. Depending on one's character, life, and circumstances, the ordinary and everyday can be as transformative as the periodic and profound. radical transformation can result from experiences and activities that are, as zen buddhists like to say, “nothing special.”. Transformative experiences are radically new experiences that significantly change who you are. can we rationally choose to have transformative experiences in a way that’s authentic to our own values? this essay explores this question.
