An epistemically transformative experience is an experience that teaches you something you could not have learned without having that kind of experience. having that experience gives you new abilities to imagine, rec ognize, and cognitively model possible future experiences of that kind. The concept of transformative experience (te) has been widely explored by several disciplines from philosophy to neurobiology, and in different domains, from the spiritual to the educational. Recognizing that paradigmatic shifts in values and worldviews can arise from transformative experiences, this study employs integral inquiry in a mixed methods design to examine the nature of the relationship between such experiences and engagement with sustainability. This paper argues that despite their unreliability, expectations are still important in the case of chosen and unchosen transformative experiences because expectations about an outcome can systematically influence the very experience of that outcome.
