I have a 1989 wrangler 4.2l engine and a999 transmission that needs a new flex plate. i purchased a crown 33004359 that was supposed to fit 88 90 wrangler 4.2 but when i installed it, the starter pinion wouldn't kick out far enough to reach the ring gear. The jeep's battery was low and the sound it made the first time it slipped was more of a twang, like the gear hitting the flex plate. engine wasn't hydro locked, it was cranking with the throttle body closed too far so it wasn't getting enough air to start. Replace the flexplate if it bothers you. it shouldn't be moving that much. there's nothing wrong with the crankshaft or thrust bearings or otherwise the torque converter would be moving too. it's just a bent flexplate ring gear.
