Fish Conservation In The Tidal Thames Zsl It represents the most comprehensive research of fish at this life stage on any uk estuary to date and demonstrated the importance of the thames as a nursery habitat. community volunteering was part of the research project so ‘citizen science’ surveys were held on the foreshore at blackfriars. Coastal habitats along the greater thames estuary, the life source of england’s capital and far beyond, will be restored as part of the $5 million project, providing vital spaces for wildlife. When complete in 2025, the tunnel will transform the quality of the tidal thames waters, capturing millions of tonnes of sewage that currently end up in the river due to a lack of capacity in the capital’s existing, predominantly victorian, sewerage network. Our fish conservation project in the tidal thames is just one of the ways we’re working to conserve wildlife in the uk. we're studying fish in the tidal thames with special focus on spawning grounds and the seasonal variations in juvenile fish presence and distribution. To communicate the past, present and future ecological value of the thames estuary to international audiences, including scientific meetings facilitated by zsl, open to the public and tideway guests. Further habitat creation is planned as part of our newly funded transforming the thames project, an ambitious partnership uniting conservationists, communities, government bodies and landowners to scale up recovery across the greater thames estuary. In order to achieve this ambitious undertaking with limited resources, zsl worked with rbc to establish an army of informed volunteers – citizen scientists – to help collect data.
