Waller Creek Tunnel Project
Waller Creek Tunnel Project Wsb partnered with the city of austin on the waller creek tunnel program. a major capital improvement initiative designed to reduce flood risk and improve resilience in downtown austin. the program diverts 100‑year storm event flows from the waller creek channel. Stretching from waterloo park to lady bird lake, the waller creek tunnel helps reduce the risk of flooding in downtown austin.
Waller Creek Tunnel Austin Designed to siphon water from the lake to the creek during dry times, the tunnel would reverse flow during heavy rain to reduce downtown flooding and allow development in what was previously flood plain. Austin’s waller creek tunnel, completed in 2017, captures floodwater and releases it into lady bird lake, reducing the size of the floodplain along lower waller creek and helping revitalize the eastern part of downtown austin, called the waller creek district. The purpose of this program of cip projects is to divert 100 year storm event flows from the waller creek channel, provide flood protection to 42 buildings, prevent flooding of 12 roadway crossings, and reduce width of the floodplain, which significantly increases the amount of developable land area. About the project the waller creek tunnel project is the very first step in transforming a part of downtown austin. the project is a storm water bypass tunnel that will capture and redirect flood waters south of 12th street and safely carry them to lady bird lake.

Waller creek tunnel project overview the waller creek corridor in downtown austin is part of a 100 year floodplain and, by the project’s start date in july 2012, was in need of a comprehensive flood relief plan. By draining 21 million gallons of water then cleaning out debris from the mile long tunnel, the project – expected to last approximately two months – aims to protect nearby streets, buildings, and the cherished hike and bike trail from the consequences of heavy storms. Beyond its technical significance, the tunnel’s creation has led to revitalization efforts in the waller creek district. thanks to the tunnel, businesses, governments, and nonprofits are able to invest in both private and public projects, including 37 acres of parks and open space. Begun in 2011, the project includes a mile long, underground tunnel extending from an inlet structure at waterloo park to an outlet near lady bird lake. the tunnel portion of the project will be capable of diverting 85% of 100 year floodwater downstream to a lagoon at the edge of lady bird lake.
