Virtual River Game

Boardgamegeek
Boardgamegeek

Boardgamegeek The virtual river game is designed as a multiplayer serious game on managing rivers. in the game, players collaboratively explore and experiment with different riverine interventions to prevent future flooding, while restoring the river’s ecological value. We present the virtual river game that aims to support stakeholders in collaboratively exploring the complexity of a changed river management paradigm in the netherlands. the game uses a novel, hybrid interface design that features a bidirectional coupling of a physical game board to computer models.

The virtual river game is presented, a serious game that challenges players to manage a schematized stretch of a dutch river and concludes that the hybrid set up has substantial value by enabling discussion and collaboration between experts and non experts. In this thesis, we took inspiration from these games to design the virtual river game and expand on these and other environmental management games by explor ing how a human centered design approach benefits a serious game’s design. Virtual river’s hybrid interface combining a physical interface with digital models. the interface also serves as a platform that can be used in many other spatial settings.

An impression of the virtual river game’s setup, including the physical board, touchscreen monitor, projector, and webcam. each hexagon tole on the board is filled with modular game pieces that define the tile’s elevation and land use. In this thesis, the design, application and evaluation of the virtual river game is described. The game board uses a hexagonal tile based grid as a representation of a fictional but typical stretch of a dutch river. each tile is filled by a combination of two modular types of game pieces that represent elevation and land use separately. An innovative element is that the game uses a physical game board – a section of river with the river gully, flood plains and dykes (see photo) – to work with computer models that are also used in practice to calculate the effects of interventions.
