More Rain Ahead For Flooded Eastern States Of Australia Act While the most serious flooding began in late february, scientists say the causes of the disaster are complex and stretch back to late last year when the east coast experienced its wettest november on record. Here we analyse the physical factors underlying this event and compare them with a large dataset of floods in australia dating back to 1950.

Another Rain Event Heads Towards East Coast Of Australia As Fears Grow One of australia's worst recorded flood disasters occurred from late february to early may 2022 in south east queensland, the wide bay–burnett and parts of coastal new south wales. Eastern australia experienced record breaking rainfall and flooding during 2022, which devastated communities and led to over au$6 billion of damage. in this study, we conduct a multiscale analysis to understand why 2022 was unusually wet with multiple record breaking rainfall events over the year. Slow moving systems of low pressure, high levels of atmospheric moisture and a perfect storm of la niña, the indian ocean dipole and the southern annular mode caused australia’s devastating 2022 floods, but more research is needed to understand the role of climate change in future heavy rainfall. Flooding in late february, march and early april caused significant damage along large sections of the australian east coast. here we describe the weather driving these events and place them in some historical context.

The structure of the weather system generating the rainfall responsible for these two floods is studied along with the climatology of such events. Rainfall totals were exceptional in parts of southeast australia during 2022. gemma plumb examines whether a rare "triple dip" la niña is to blame. From 2020 to 2022, eastern australia had much more rain than usual. in these years, three la niña events occurred in a row, only the third occurrence of a triple la niña since the 1950s. Areas of the hawkesbury nepean valley were some of the hardest hit in the march 2022 floods, which left thousands of homes damaged and uninhabitable. several climate systems influence australia’s weather.
