U Turn Intersections Innovative Intersect
Home Innovative Intersections What are innovative intersections? innovative intersections use non traditional methods to improve traffic flow at crossroads, leading to enhanced safety, operational performance, and resiliency. Have you ever tried to turn left from a parking lot onto a busy arterial, and found it impossible to get a gap in both directions? it is often faster and safer to just turn right, then make a u turn wherever possible. u turn intersections formalize that action.
Home Innovative Intersections • simulation found spacing of 2000 ft between main intersection and u turn intersections to have highest speeds; although spacing of 1000 ft or 1500 ft was within 5 mph. Innovative intersections divert left turns away from the main intersection, which reduces intersection congestion and simplifies the signal phases at the main intersection. This project investigated the operational and safety benefits of modern roundabouts and selected innovative intersection designs for high speed locations as well as best practices for designing these intersections. Innovative intersection designs (e.g., j turns, median u turns) have been used to remove conflict points and redistribute turning traffic from traditional intersections, and their success has been documented at locations across the country.

There are three basic “placemaking families” of alternative intersection designs explored here: 1) quadrant intersections, 2) u turns (which encompass median u turns, rcut rci, bowties, teardrops, loons, and roundabouts), and 3) one way split intersections. see links to these topics below. The innovative intersections fact sheets contain valuable descriptions, facts, scenarios and benefits associated with commonly used innovative intersection types. Left turns are also the most dangerous maneuver at most intersections, especially those with no signals or with permissive left turn signals. to solve this problem, a number of unconventional intersection designs have been developed over the years both in the us and abroad. The research team will build on recent research to document the benefits of innovative intersections, develop case studies of successfully implemented intersections in texas, and provide resources for practitioners to use in support of new implementation across the state.
