I could imagine myself joining the school in the fall and beginning my doctoral research immediately. i had visited the lab during prospective grad student weekend, so i knew exactly where i’d be working, what i’d be working on, and who i’d be working with. Students who worked in a lab before joining bbs must complete two new lab rotations before returning to that lab for a rotation. all rotations should be added to the crimson cart via bbs 333r for a minimum of 4 6 8 credits for the fall semester and 4 6 8 credits for the spring semester of g1.

There are two main models that graduate programs are based on, either professor or cohort based. in the first model, you must contact and coordinate with a professor to join their research group. in the second model, you directly apply to the graduate program and join a cohort. I joined a lab that started the same semester i did it's been really fun. your fit with your mentor is way more important than how established they are, but there are some logistical angles to established vs new pis so here's my personal experience. In the us, biomedical research phd students arrive on campus in late august and soon begin a daunting and stressful process of lab rotations. as i describe in my graduate student philosophy, this is akin to speed dating. If you’re interested in joining the lab, please contact dr. de leo by email (and see below for information on when and how to apply through stanford). include your research interests (in a few sentences), a brief summary of your relevant experience, and a cv.
