Tips For Removing The Timing Chain Cover Mustang Forums At Stangnet I've been reading and many people seem to think its the timing chain and slack in it. i removed the serpentine belt to eliminate the accessories, still making the ticking knocking noise. You don't have to remove the oil pan, but the front of the pan is bolted to the bottom of the timing cover. don't start pulling on the old timing cover until those pan bolts are out, otherwise you'll bend the front lip of the pan.
Tips For Removing The Timing Chain Cover Mustang Forums At Stangnet The long bolts are threaded into the block and not into the timing cover. if they are the short bolt then remove the timing cover and you can take the timing cover to the bench and work on it. If i am going to try to get these bolts free myself, i have to take off the timing chain cover. i wanted to check with you guys first and make sure this is something practical for me to do myself. I used a 1 16" drill bit (tiny) to drill out the rust between the timing cover and the broken bolts. after drilling several holes around the rusted bolts, the timing cover released from the rust locking it in. Take off valve covers the front cover bolts and carefully loosen front cover from everything else. when you go back together you will want a new gasket for the front cover and valvecovers, just put some silicone around the pan gasket so it will not leak.

There are no threads in the timing chain cover where that bolt is broken. as other members have said, weld a nut to the broken bolt, then try to loosen the bolt carefully. Before i go and do things that will destroy this original timing chain cover, or worse, is there a fairly reliable method to getting this seized, un reachable bolt free from the timing chain cover and ultimately the block?. Quick question for the 4.6 2v sohc engine, when removing the timing chain cover, my nifty book says im going to have to remove the oil pan. need to know if this is accurate, i relize couple of the bolts in the oil pan hold the cover, but do i need to remove the oil pan complety?.
