Providing a commentary of singapore’s digital journey and its governing approaches, this paper contends that ai is more than just a new digital tool for singaporeans; it is also a proxy for singapore’s digital and ‘smart nation’ global reputation. By examining the case of singapore, we argue that by designing policies that address risks associated with ai development and implementation, smaller countries can create a vibrant ai ecosystem. Singapore may be a small island state, but we have big dreams and plans. we will participate fully in ai research and deployment, to do things that were not possible before, and bring benefits to ourselves and others outside singapore.
