Our materials center team was in two classrooms facilitating a loose parts exploration with materials already familiar to the children. as the pre k students joyfully created, their understanding of things such as construction, balance, and artful arranging was made apparent to their families. In this workshop for early childhood educators, we will engage in a hands on experience with found materials, learn through group reflection, and shop for inspiring classroom materials in the materials center. When we visit schools we encourage children to play, create, and build with the materials we bring. these three words offer children the freedom to explore and express ideas without the pressure or expectation of predetermined outcomes. Working at the materials center allows wendy to regularly offer young children the kinds of opportunities she passionately believes in: to play and explore freely, to learn about the qualities for self expression inherent in all sorts of materials, and to contribute to a more sustainable future for us and our planet.
