One pedagogical approach that has been an emerging focus in ece is the ‘makerspace’ movement which clearly aligns with stem learning using technology as well as supporting children to engage in engineering type processes (johnston et al., 2022).

The Makerspace 2022 2024 The making spaces 2 project (2022 to 2024) was led by professor louise archer at ucl and funded by lloyd’s register foundation. it aimed to increase knowledge and identify equitable practices which support diverse young people’s engagement with stem (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). This article fuses approaches from urban design, planning and cultural anthropology to outline a novel approach to understanding the value of a makerspace. we argue that makerspaces can help to (re)produce the unique culture and character of their host communities. We investigate the goals and values articulated by makerspaces across the united states, exploring themes informed by the culture of the maker movement. The findings reveal that the identity of makerspaces, characterized by values such as collaboration, valuing ideas, and hands on learning, converges with the intentional design of learning environments and the structure of educational programs to foster entrepreneurial competences.
