Significant language shift patterns exist among taiwan's ethnic groups, especially between mandarin and native languages. the study explores language proficiency and use among minnanrens, hakka, and aboriginals across age, gender, and education levels. The taiwanese language movement emerged to counteract colonial mandarin imposition by the roc since 1949. taiwan's diverse ethnic composition includes 73.3% taiwanese, 12% hakka, and 1.7% indigenous peoples. despite being the dominant language pre 1949, taiwanese has never been officially recognized as a national language. In this paper i will discuss the history of the taiwanese1 language on the island of taiwan, and explore its potential to continue into the future.
