Linguistics Diverse approaches, such as generative grammar and functional grammar, offer unique perspectives on syntax, reflecting its complexity and centrality to understanding human language. In short, although most linguists may be motivated primarily by sim ple intellectual curiosity, the study of grammar has some fairly obvious uses, even in the relatively short term. We will investigate the structures of typologically very different languages, with a view to developing a universally grounded theory of linguistic structure. The practical aim of this course is to develop a solid conceptual, analytical and empirical basis for research in syntax; this includes the honing of syntactic argumentation skills, which is accomplished through written work and in class discussion.
