Current and projected state of earth’s climate, resources and ecosystems require a substantial push towards sustainability, well above what is cur ently employed. the construction sector is a major contributor to the global emission of greenhouse gases and a consu er of scarce natural resources. in this work an environmental impact assessment. In the context of sustainability, the holocene represents a baseline of environmental conditions within which human societies have historically prospered. understanding these conditions is crucial for assessing how anthropogenic climate change is pushing earth systems beyond this stable state. The stable holocene climate allowed for the development of mature, complex ecosystems with predictable functions and services. these natural systems, from fertile topsoil formation to reliable water cycling, became the biophysical foundation for human society. Pressure on low to mid latitude deltas has occurred through 275 exponential population growth (fig. 2) that brings with it dramatic changes that strain the 276 sustainability of deltas, whatever the breadth of their holocene relationship with humans.
