A subculture typically refers to a group that shares certain values, beliefs, or behaviors while still acknowledging their connection to the mainstream culture. this can include ethnic groups, youth groups, and various occupational or interest based communities. In his 1979 book subculture: the meaning of style, dick hebdige argued that a subculture is a subversion to normalcy. he wrote that subcultures can be perceived as negative due to their nature of criticism to the dominant societal standard. The birmingham school added to subcultural theory, investigating the ways in which individuals joined groups that participated in collective forms of deviance, referred to as subcultures.
