Spia Index
Spia Index It is a tool to be used for risk management and or winter weather preparedness. the spia® index is to ice storms what the enhanced fujita scale is to tornadoes, and what the saffir–simpson scale is to hurricanes. The index was introduced in 2007 by sidney sperry of the oklahoma association of electric cooperatives, who developed the index together with steven piltz, meteorologist in charge at the national weather service office in tulsa, oklahoma.
Spia Index The sperry–piltz ice accumulation index, or spia index ®, is a forward looking, ice accumulation and ice damage prediction index. when used in conjunction with national weather service forecast data, it has been shown to accurately predict the duration, intensity and damage capability of approaching ice storms. The spia index is the best tool for supporting operational decisions regarding where when to stage crews, whether to put contractors on retainer before other organizations, and determine if it’s necessary to contact mutual aide partners before an ice storm. What is the ‘sperry piltz ice accumulation index©’ or spia indextm? the spia indextm is to ice storms what the enhanced fujita scale is to tornadoes and what the saffir simpson scale is to hurricanes; unlike the fujita scale, the spia indextm measures an ice storm and its impact before the event. Developed in 2007 by sidney sperry and steven piltz, the spia index predicts the severity of ice storms by considering factors such as expected ice accumulation and wind speed.
Oklahoma Ice What is the ‘sperry piltz ice accumulation index©’ or spia indextm? the spia indextm is to ice storms what the enhanced fujita scale is to tornadoes and what the saffir simpson scale is to hurricanes; unlike the fujita scale, the spia indextm measures an ice storm and its impact before the event. Developed in 2007 by sidney sperry and steven piltz, the spia index predicts the severity of ice storms by considering factors such as expected ice accumulation and wind speed. Spia index graphics include: total ice accumulation forecast for period; and cumulative spia index levels for same period. The index was introduced in 2007 by sidney sperry of the oklahoma association of electric cooperatives, who developed the index together with steven piltz, meteorologist in charge at the national weather service office in tulsa, oklahoma. Resolved, that the board of directors of the national association of regulatory utility commissioners, convened at its 2009 summer committee meetings in seattle, washington, supports the consideration of adoption and implementation of the “sperry piltz ice accumulation index,” or “spia index” by all offices of the national weather. Spia index levels with nws total ice forecast southeast maps display the current forecast data available for the southeastern states of tennessee, north carolina, south carolina, mississippi, alabama, georgia and florida.
