When you respawn the player after they reach a checkpoint, they are moved back to the checkpoint. i'm guessing the enemy spawnpoint is too far from the checkpoint and enemy can't "see" the player any more. as an aside, it is very bad practice to put public variables in your classes.

The reason the script breaks is because the currently referenced character is non existent (as it died, of course) so this is the way to go. note, use this only if characterautoloads is enabled. The issue is, if the player respawns while those few seconds of waiting are in progress, the script does not tween the camera back to the player’s head’s cframe, but just stays in place.
