Despite still being tempted to pursue a career as a doctor, aged fifteen ruth decided to enter future chef – a rigorous culinary competition run by the charity springboard for those up to the age of sixteen.

Ruth Hansom Futurechef Growing up in darlington, ruth started cooking at home from a young age and began to grow her own fruit and veg in the garden aged around 12. she entered the futurechef competition for under 16s and made it to the national final in london. After bursting onto the food scene as a teenager when winning the springboard futurechef, it was clear to all that young chef ruth hansom was always going to succeed. Ruth had competed in the futurechef competition run by springboard a year prior, whizzing through to the final in london where she recalls people handing her business cards and offering her jobs. it was a discombobulating experience, but one that resonated with her instantly.
