Responding to the loss of airborne early warning (aew) capability with the demise of the royal navy’s carriers, twelve shackletons were pressed into service as aew.2 aircraft in 1971.

When a gap in the uk airborne early warning (aew) capability emerged (due to problems with the proposed bae nimrod aew and a delay before the boeing e 3 sentry could be introduced), the decision was taken to modify the avro 696 shackleton mr.2 to undertake the aew role as an interim measure. In june 1971 she was converted to aew.2 specification with aew radar installation and allocation to 8 sqn the following year whilst acquiring the name ‘ermintrude’. in july 1991 she was sold at auction to a private buyer and delivered to coventry airport having clocked up 15,483 hours flown. The first production model for the raf, later redesignated shackleton mr.1, to specification r.5 46 to meet the requirements of or.200 (originally b.5 46 to or.191) for a maritime reconnaissance aircraft. Avro shackleton mr mk 2 and avro shackleton mr mk3 aircraft continued the maritime reconnaissance and search and rescue roles until 1972. twelve shackleton mr mk2 aircraft were converted to aew mk2 and performed the airbourne early warning (aew) role until june 1991.
