Queer Maps In your book, you use data visualizations — maps and graphs — to show the spatial displacements, over decades, of communities and businesses and other kinds of sites that have been important to lesbians and queers in new york city. you’ve invited participants at your talks to make mental maps. Anyone can anonymously place a pin on the map and submit their own experience in text form. the pins not only indicate fixed locations like queer bars or bookstores but also point to more ephemeral queer spaces marked as such only by a fleeting experience. Visitors anonymously pin their experiences, memories and histories to an online global map, and each pin contains a unique micro story of queerness: the meaningful and mundane experiences of lgbtqia life. We reveal how people contribute to a map of queer life and to a queer mapping of life – and thereby become cartographic queers.
