Propellant Profiles Handloader Magazine Production of granulated black powder for pyrotechnics in a simple way based on thiourea. Gunpowder, commonly referred to as black powder to distinguish it from modern smokeless powder, is the earliest known chemical explosive. it consists of a mixture of sulfur, charcoal (which is mostly carbon), and potassium nitrate (saltpeter).

Propellant Profiles Handloader Magazine In this video, we break down every major type of propellant used in firearms and artillery: black powder, corned powder, nitrocellulose smokeless powder, ball powder, flake powder, extruded. We will cover the essential ingredients that make up this propellant, including charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate, and explain the role each component plays in its effectiveness. This experiment is part of my ongoing journey in amateur rocketry, where i explore different rocket propellant formulations, rocket motor construction, and propellant chemistry. Pucking, corning or compressing (black powder) antique propellant.educational video only.

It describes how black powder was the earliest form of propellant and was later replaced by nitro based smokeless powders like nitrocellulose. nitrocellulose powders can be modified through various additives to control the burning rate and produce consistent pressures. Given the chemistry discussed, the storage of modern gunpowder requires a different approach than black powder. because smokeless powder is a propellant (deflagrant) rather than a high explosive, it is relatively safe when stored correctly. The resulting compounds, especially the resulting solids, highlight some of the weaknesses inherent to black powder as a propellant. unlike modern smokeless propellants, which convert almost completely to gas, black powder converts more than half of its mass into new solids. Muzzleloading firearms use a special type of propellant, commonly referred to as blackpowder. traditional blackpowder is a corrosive material, which can cause the barrel of your firearm to rust quickly.
