The scheller teacher education program (step) offers a pathway for mit students to earn stem teaching licensure in massachusetts. applications for the 2026–2027 step cohort are now open. It is a three year project involving roughly 30 middle school teachers and over 900 middle school students, who engage with ai concepts and tools. central to the intervention is the developing ai literacy (daily) curriculum consisting of a series of existing ai and “ethics and ai” activities.

Our research has illustrated how this group of project based teachers enacted 11 core practices related to four central goals of project based learning: creating classrooms that are disciplinary, authentic, iterative, and collaborative.
