Project Accessible Oceans Devpost
Project Accessible Oceans Devpost The inspiration for project accessible oceans came from my own experiences when i was in about 3rd or 4th grade. aquariums were always a place of learning, somewhere where knowledge was around every bend, but in a much more stimulating environment than a book or movie. We draw on knowledge from the learning sciences and human computer interaction to create interactions with ocean data that are accessible to learners of varying abilities and backgrounds.
Project Accessible Oceans Devpost The aim of the “accessible oceans” project is to inclusively design auditory displays of authentic ocean data to study their ability to convey meaningful aspects of ocean science to both sighted and non sighted learners. The accessible oceans study will design auditory displays that support learning and understanding of ocean data in informal learning environments like museums, science centers, and aquariums. This project will use sonification to convey key data about ocean phenomena from charts and graphs for all learners with and without disabilities. it will include a context setting audio introduction that will help ensure all users start with the same basic information about the subject. In this two year project, we will leverage existing curated ocean datasets, known as “data nuggets”, from the nsf funded ocean observatories initiative to produce and evaluate the feasibility of using integrated auditory displays to communicate tiered learning objectives of oceanographic principles. Project accessible oceans bringing the aquariums to you. By allowing users to input their own plastic consumption and see how it contributes to ocean pollution, the project transforms a global environmental issue into something personal and understandable, even for younger populations. The accessible oceans project was featured on the ocean observatories initiative website in march, 2023. the “making the ocean accessible through sound” article includes interviews with co pi’s amy as well as a few clips of our data sonifications.
