Probe Orbiter
Probe Orbiter Galileo was an american robotic space probe that studied the planet jupiter and its moons, as well as the asteroids gaspra and ida. named after the italian astronomer galileo galilei, it consisted of an orbiter and an entry probe. The wok shaped probe floated down about 200 kilometers (125 miles) through the clouds, transmitting data to the orbiter on sunlight and heat flux, pressure, temperature, winds, lightning and atmospheric composition.
Probe Orbiter On july 13, 1995, galileo released a 339 kg (747 pound) atmospheric probe on a collision course with jupiter. nearly five months later (december 7) the probe penetrated the jovian cloud tops slightly north of the equator. An orbiter is a probe that is sent to a body and continually orbits it for the duration of its mission life. when it arrives at the target it must slow down using fuel or aerobraking, using the upper part of an atmosphere to resist its speed. Curious about the types of space probes? delve into the universe of space exploration as we unveil the types of probes, from orbiters to rovers. There were eleven subsystems and nine scientific instruments on the orbiter. the spacecraft power source was a pair of radioisotope thermoelectric generators. propulsion was provided by a bipropellant system of twelve 10 newton thrusters and one 400 newton engine.

The galileo mission consists of two spacecraft: an orbiter and an atmospheric probe. launched during the sts 34 flight of the atlantis orbiter, the two spacecraft were kicked out of earth orbit by an inertial upper stage (ius) rocket, sending them careening through the inner solar system. Orbiter probes are designed to go into orbit around a particular body in the solar system, allowing for extended observations over time. orbiters can study a range of characteristics including the atmosphere, surface and magnetosphere. It was the first spacecraft to visit an asteroid two in fact, gaspra and ida. galileo provided the only direct observations of a comet colliding with a planet. and its flight past venus in 1990 yielded fascinating infrared images of the planet's clouds. Eight missions have flown to the outer planets, including pioneer 10 & 11, voyager 1 & 2, ulysses, galileo, cassini, and the new horizons probe to pluto. the american juno mission, the first solar powered spacecraft to visit jupiter, was launched in 2011 and is currently orbiting the planet.
