Ambivalence Evidence Network

Ambivalence Evidence Network In the early days of parenting, some people can feel ambivalent towards their child before they really start to form a close bond. yet much of the ambivalence that many new mothers feel has more to do with the concept of motherhood. Three distinct, temporally embedded, stages of becoming and being a parent are analysed in relation to ambivalence on the basis of data originating from two qualitative research projects conducted in poland. While occasional ambivalence is normal and often transient, persistent parental or child ambivalence can signal deeper relational issues that may require professional intervention. Based on studies of intergenerational ambivalence, this chapter highlights the universality of ambivalence embedded in family relations and summarizes the existing literature regarding influential factors, operationalization and measurements, and psychosocial consequences of ambivalence.
