Availability and use of illicit fentanyls are still the major drivers of overdose deaths and the current rise in stimulant related deaths appears entwined with the ongoing opioid epidemic. Overdose deaths were lower during the first quarter of 2024 than during the same time period in 2023; however, data are preliminary and subject to change. fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, was the most common substance involved in overdose deaths and continues to drive the overdose epidemic citywide.
