This building had originally been built between 1898 and 1899 by the architect harry gill as a shop and warehouse for henry barker. it was converted by michael tempest and colin mcintosh of the nottinghamshire county architect's department for use as a library. Collaboration has been integral to nottingham's new central library, a focal point of the broad marsh regeneration. pick everard led a multidisciplinary effort, working closely with architects faulknerbrowns, m&e consultancy chord, and construction experts morgan sindall and overbury. The library design encourages visitors to visually connect with this external green space and the historic city context beyond, as well as encouraging passers by to engage with the diverse activities taking place internally to enhance participation.

Contractor overbury – part of morgan sindall group – commenced work on the scheme in august 2022 under an nec4 engineering and construction contraction (ecc) option a, with multi disciplinary consultancy pick everard acting as nec project manager and supervisor. As part of the scape framework, the city council enlisted overbury to complete the vision. nottingham city council embarked on a transformative initiative to create a new central library that would not only serve the local community but also attract visitors from afar. Faulknerbrowns architects has won a competition to design the inside of an ambitious new library in the east midlands. nottingham city council selected the newcastle practice to shape the internal fit out of the city’s planned central library. Project partners for nottingham central library included overbury, morgan sindall, pick everard, chord consult, faulkner brown architects, desco and newenglish design, who have all contributed to specialist interior fitouts and refurbishments.
