In the uk, most animals are stunned before slaughter so they’re unconscious and don’t feel pain. sadly, not all are. some animals are killed while still fully conscious in what’s known as non stun slaughter – and that raises serious concerns for animal welfare. The government encourages the highest standards of animal welfare at slaughter and would prefer all animals to be stunned before slaughter, but it respects the rights of jews and muslims to eat meat prepared in accordance with their religious beliefs. The rspca has renewed calls to end non stun slaughter as the food standards authority (fsa) released figures showing a rise in animals slaughtered without pre stunning, which now stands at around half million animals every week.
