Non Stun Slaughter Millions of farm animals endure unnecessary suffering before death. join our campaign and call for an end to non stun slaughter in the uk. Whilst current available stunning methods can also raise animal welfare concerns, these are separate from those relating to the suffering caused by non stun slaughter and are outside the scope of this short briefing. In the uk, most animals are stunned before slaughter so they’re unconscious and don’t feel pain. sadly, not all are. some animals are killed while still fully conscious in what’s known as non stun slaughter – and that raises serious concerns for animal welfare. The government encourages the highest standards of animal welfare at slaughter and would prefer all animals to be stunned before slaughter, but it respects the rights of jews and muslims to eat meat prepared in accordance with their religious beliefs. The rspca has renewed calls to end non stun slaughter as the food standards authority (fsa) released figures showing a rise in animals slaughtered without pre stunning, which now stands at around half million animals every week. Our concern has nothing to do with the expression of religious belief but with the practice of killing by throat cutting without pre stunning. fve therefore advocate that labelling should refer to non stun slaughter rather than a method of religious slaughter.
