Dean can be spared, but it's tricky. he's ultimately a horrible insecure person so if at any point you make him feel used or out of control (like using speech skills to force him into things he doesn't wanna do) he will turn on you. if you don't at the end of the dlc he is all too happy to help you out. There is some great crafting in fnv, but it takes a while to learn what makes what so i wouldn't focus on it. you do want, however, scrap metal electronics and sensor modules for the first companion in the game. I loved the amount of freedom the game gives; there is no definitive right or wrong choice, it's up to you to decide how to deal in particular situation and the game will adapt. Mechanically, fnv can be played in either first or third person perspectives, and offers a variety of highly violent (or non violent!) means to solve or bypass the challenges presented to you in game.
