Nismod Itrc Nismod is a key resource, which helps the commission deliver rigorous evidence based advice to government, and understand cross sectoral challenges such as resilience. National infrastructure systems model (nismod) is the uk’s first national infrastructure system of systems modelling platform and database.

Nismod Itrc Nismod (national infrastructure systems model) is a system of systems modelling platform that works in three main domains: (1) long term strategic infrastructure planning, (2) infrastructure for sustainable development and (3) risk and resilience assessment. The research is undertaken by the itrc consortium, consisting of seven universities, with funding from epsrc as well as funds and resources from many industry partners. It simulates interdependent infrastructure systems in great britain and allows the assessment of national cross sectoral strategies for infrastructure provision based upon a multi dimensional performance metrics, including costs of service, carbon intensity and security of supply. The itrc provides data and modelling to help governments, policymakers and other stakeholders in infrastructure make more sustainable and resilient infrastructure decisions.

Itrc also developed a high resolution model of britain’s interdependent infrastructure networks for analysis of infrastructure risk and vulnerability: nismod rv, which was used to analyse vulnerabilities in the transport network for the department of transport. Developed since 2010 through successive research projects beginning with the infrastructure transitions research consortium (itrc) it enables strategic planning and resilience assessment for infrastructure networks. What about the name? nismod, the national infrastructure systems model, was originally developed by the infrastrucure transitions research consortium (itrc) between 2009 2020, with various components: for long term planning in the uk, infrastructure planning for sustainable development, and infrastructure risk and resilience assessment.
