News Orpheus Ocean Advances Deep Sea Research In The Mariana Islands Over the course of a 3 week expedition in may 2025, our team deployed the orpheus auv to record smashing depths, surveying previously unexplored parts of seafloor in the us territorial waters around guam and the mariana islands. Newly found polymetallic nodules were imaged on the seabed at 5,645 meters (3.51 miles) water depth to the east of the commonwealth of the northern mariana islands using the orpheus autonomous underwater vehicle during an expedition on exploration vessel nautilus.

The ocean exploration trust's (oet) research vessel nautilus has departed on its first expedition of 2025 to study underwater volcanoes and deep sea environments near the mariana islands. As part of a larger expedition to expand our knowledge of the seafloor, the oeci partnered with orpheus ocean to field test their new auv east of the mariana trench. The orpheus auv will allow the team to explore the abyssal seafloor at depths up to 6,000 meters, which has to date been virtually unexplored around the mariana islands.
