The controller is supposed to be wired like this. if other controllers work on the console, the 5 required wires show continuity (i.e. there isn't a break in the cable), and wiring internal to the controller seems correct, then it could be that the shift register has failed and needs to be replaced. I just directly plug my nes rf into the back of my modern tv and it works fine outside of a very slight color shift every 10 seconds or so, but it isn't noticeable most of the time.
