National Genotyping Programme Icbf
National Genotyping Programme Icbf The national genotyping programme is a collaborative initiative enabling ireland to take the first step in achieving a fully genotyped national herd. based on a cost sharing model between the department of agriculture, food & the marine, the beef & dairy industry & participating farmers. The key building block for the breeding strategies referenced in the reports is a national genotyping strategy. the accurate information available from genotyping will also contribute to enhanced integration between the dairy and beef sectors, and to improving animal health and welfare.
National Genotyping Programme Icbf It began in 2023 and aims to build a fully genotyped national herd. this would be a world first initiative, which integrates dna sampling into calf registrations to verify parentage and deliver genomic evaluations for newborn calves. All cows and heifers are genotyped for free in preparation for registering calves via the dna process. this takes place in year 1 of the herd’s participation in the programme. calves’ genotyping will cost €4 thereafter and will be paid at tag purchase. Icbf is writing to farmers, providing an information booklet, to answer the key and frequently asked questions they may have in relation to the national genotyping programme (ngp). the programme, operated by the icbf, offers farmers the opportunity to genotype their herd at a subsidised cost. Minister for agriculture, food and the marine, charlie mcconalogue formally announced the €43 million programme last month. the voluntary genotyping programme, which will be available to both beef and dairy herd owners, will run over a five year period.
