Chicago's maritime history hit its first peak during the "golden age" of the american steamboat. prior to and during the civil war era, small but fast (in comparison with previous technology) palace steamers carried passengers and freight over the great lakes to chicago.

Military Training Chicago Maritime Museum Maritime freight traffic enabled chicago to make a fast recovery from the great chicago fire of 1871. according to the chicago maritime museum, chicago's ship docking operations in 1872 exceeded that of any other port in the united states. The museum is located on the chicago river in the riverwalk park and features over 10,000 objects related to maritime history and navigation, including artifacts, archives, and art. Illinois naval militia. the naval vessels with the longest history of association with chicago were those associated with training sailors, which was first done by the illinois naval militia. the militia trained on the uss michigan every summer from 1890 until 1901. In conjunction with the bridgeport art center's third friday open house, the chicago maritime museum hosts local maritime experts and authors on the third friday of the month starting at 7:00pm.
