Media Corner Crop Trust A year ago, a small but influential group of crop diversity experts gathered at the rockefeller foundation’s bellagio center in northern italy to discuss a shared concern: the loss of vegetable biodiversity – and how to stop it. There is a crop whose grain is gluten free, has more dietary fibre than brown rice and has more than 40% of essential amino acids. it reduces the risk of cancer, obesity and excessive cholesterol. Nate kleinman gathered seeds for ukrainian crops including winter squash, sunflower, and medicinal herbs, with plans to cultivate them this spring on his new jersey farm. then russia attacked his ancestral homeland. In 2024, the crop trust built on the momentum of the first ever crop diversity summit, highlighting the need for food system transformation with crop diversity at its core. we championed collaboration and called for increased funding. our partners and donors answered the call. The event addressed the urgent need for more productive, sustainable, resilient and healthy agri food systems in the face of major global challenges such as the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, malnutrition and conflict. The series began in may and featured one crop each month, telling the story of the people who grow them and the race to make them more resilient in the face of emerging challenges. stories were published on the crop trust website along with a short, animated video and a podcast on spotify.
