What an act of grace! and baptism is a window through which we can see the grace of god. john saw it, and those around him saw it. “as soon as jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. at that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the spirit of god descending like a dove and lighting upon him.”. Although jesus underwent the same baptism as the crowds who came to john, his baptism was unique. no one else had the holy spirit descending on them, and certainly no one had the voice of the father booming from heaven. John the baptist preached the message, “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (matthew 3:1). those who came to john to be baptized by him were repentant. they were sorry for their sins. they came confessing their sins, for they were sinners. God came in the flesh and used that body to be your savior from sin, and that is what we see happening at jesus’ baptism. today, we’re mainly going to focus on how jesus responds to john’s objection, but before we do that, we need to consider for a minute what jesus’ baptism accomplishes.
