Martinu's work occupies an important niche in the lineage of czech music. the first quartet, written in 1918, opens with a sweet folk melody in the viola over a sustained chord by the other players, the latter creating the tonal quality of a church organ. During his education at the prague conservatory it did not seem that bohuslav martinu (1890 1959) would make it far in the field of music. martinu studied there from 1906 to 1910, but left school without a diploma and lived for a long time by teaching and playing in orchestras. Martinu’s first quartet is of epic proportions, running to a length of just under 40 minutes. essentially a conservative work, it has four movements and the writing reveals a significant influence of dvorak. this is fine early 20th century music. it opens very tenderly and peacefully with a fugue. Martinů composed seven quartets over the course of his career, from the first in 1918 to the seventh in 1947.
