Review: magic magic is often advertised as a horror movie, however, i would say it's more of a psychological thriller with a very dark and intense undertone. juno temple is giving a master performance, her acting is on point and very disturbing.
Magic Magic Review Movie Empire Review: “ magic magic ” is really not a traditional horror film, if you can call it that at all. in fact its first hour is spent following the discontent of one vacationing alicia (juno temple) who is invited to spend some time in chile with her cousin sarah (emily browning) and her friends. There’s a terrific ensemble at the heart of magic magic, including its talented director, but this psychological horror is only creepily superficial and has very little of anything insightful to say about people, its characters or its lead. Overall consensus: a divisive film, some find ‘magic magic’ to be a compelling and unsettling psychological drama, while others find it slow, boring, and ultimately unsatisfying due to its ambiguous ending. With an obnoxious cast of characters and some patchy acting in the supporting cast, i’m not surprised magic magic often gets dismissed as a clumsily written misstep, but there’s something about it that really got it’s claws into me.

Along comes director sebastian silva with a peculiar, unexpected thriller entitled magic magic and starring a trio of recognizable talent: juno temple, emily browning and michael cera. But mr. silva has some fun with signs and sigils, blurring reality in effective low budget style, and ms. temple's nervous air has never been put to better use; she spends the whole film acting like a skittish foal scanning for routes of escape, though none arrives. While crystal fairy just about manages to overcome its problems by delivering on an emotional level. magic magic is not so lucky, despite excellent central performances by juno temple and michael cera (who also gives a stand out turn in crystal fairy). After a slow buildup, 'magic magic' segues into full blown psychological horror in a classic roman polanski vein.
