Midlands arts centre (mac) lies just south of the centre of birmingham. an arts charity founded in 1962, it has several galleries on site, is home to theatre spaces and an independent cinema, and runs over 140 courses a week for visitors, including painting, jewellery, yoga, and ceramics. One such life that was shaped at mac was that of a young skateboarding named adrian lester. now a huge star of stage, film and tv, he told us: “it’s because of that building i do what i do. it introduced me to all forms of art and allowed me to just turn up and absorb it.”. The project showcased the potential for an important asset to birmingham, to enhance and nurture arts based activities for the communities of birmingham which love and use the spaces at mac. Midlands art centre (mac), based in cannon hill park in edgbaston, has shut its main theatre to the public as a precautionary measure so essential building work can be carried out.
