The concept of living income goes a step beyond traditional notions of poverty alleviation that are concerned with basic subsistence and survival. it puts a strong emphasis on the idea of decency and earning enough income to live comfortably. By continuing to support and expand initiatives through impact beyond programs, sucafina is improving farming families’ ability to achieve a living income. these efforts don’t just benefit individual farming households but entire communities and the wider coffee industry. Achieving sustainability in the coffee sector depends on ensuring smallholder coffee farmers earn a living income—a level of earnings that supports a decent standard of living, beyond basic survival. despite ongoing efforts, most coffee farmers remain far from this goal, with income gaps of 30 85%.

Living income is the income needed to maintain a decent standard of living – as such it should be part of any sustainability strategy. despite ongoing efforts to improve livelihoods, most smallholder coffee farmers and their families are still far from earning a living income. With living income identified as one of our ten human rights salient issues (pdf, 14mb), we have worked with the non profit sustainable food lab to create an action plan which focuses on our cocoa, coffee and dairy supply chains. we will report on its implementation in 2025. Chapter 3 introduces the concept of living income and highlights how the concept difers from traditional poverty measures. two living income benchmarks conducted in colombia form the basis of the living income gap measurements in this study.
