Achieving sustainability in the coffee sector depends on ensuring smallholder coffee farmers earn a living income—a level of earnings that supports a decent standard of living, beyond basic survival. despite ongoing efforts, most coffee farmers remain far from this goal, with income gaps of 30 85%. We believe that successful action programs to improve coffee farmer incomes and achieve a living income for coffee farmers as well as to attract younger generations and improve the sector’s sustainability, requires robust, transparent and internationally comparable estimates of living income needed. In this section, we define living wages and outline the historical context in which the concept emerged and developed, followed by a brief overview of approaches used to determine living wages.
